Mission Statement

Mission: The mission of the Center for Cross-Cultural Health is to incorporate the role of Culture into Health Care Organizations.

Who We Are

The Center for Cross-Cultural Health helps those who provide health care, and those who work to improve health, to integrate cultural understanding into their activities through the use of our core products and tools.

The Center for Cross-Cultural Health believes in building a future of better health and well-being for all through cross-cultural understanding.

The Center for Cross-Cultural Health has been actively involved in education, consultation, assessment, and training about cultural competency in Minnesota and nationally since 1997. The Center also serves as an information resource through its publications and website.

The Strategies of The Center for Cross-Cultural Health are to:

  • Collaborate with ethnic based communities and their community organizations to identify, understand and act on disparities in health and in health care.
  • Co-create solutions that build on the knowledge, skills and resources of the community experiencing the problem.
  • Expand the understanding and capacity of health care organizations to provide culturally appropriate services.
  • Provide ethnic based community organizations, medical organizations and other key stakeholders with the knowledge, tools, and resources to effectively develop, implement and evaluate initiatives to eliminate disparities in health.
  • Create spaces where stakeholders come together to learn about each other, build relationships and discover their unique capacities to address disparities and increase health equity.

Background

Since 1997, The Center has assisted health and human service organizations in putting into place practices and policies that enhance their ability to provide culturally appropriate services to their patients and/or clients. Our understanding of the unique qualities of the medical culture, of how decisions are made within that system and of the need for evidence-based, quantifiable outcomes prepares us for the bridging and convening role we play between the communities experiencing the greatest disparities and the medical community.

The Center has deep and broad experience with community-based systems and cultures. Just as we understand the barriers to change within the medical system, we have a thorough grasp of how change happens within a community or sector of a community. We have relationships with multiple communities, including ethnic, immigrant and refugee communities, and have a deep understanding of the barriers to health care they encounter.

The Center is staffed by a talented multidisciplinary team with expertise in medicine, public health, community development, community organizing, participatory action research, and evaluation. The Center has extensive experience in the creation of health-care related curriculum and in the development and implementation of training programs. In addition, our staff have experience in managing large scale, multi-stakeholder initiatives. We have nearly 50 years of combined project management experience, over 20 years of experience in research and data collection, nearly 40 years of working to engage communities and 20 years of mobilizing and organizing communities in collective action to address root causes of problems and in changing systems.

The Center is registered with the State of Minnesota as a 501(3)(c) non-profit.
